The collection consists of personal papers of E. Merton Coulter from 1898-1981. The papers include correspondence, clippings, diaries, financial records (1920-1977), lecture notes, student papers, grade books (1914-1958), and writings of others, as well as printed material, photographs, and slides pertaining to Georgia or Coulter's travels abroad. The correspondence (1898-1981) includes carbons (1946-1979) of Coulter's outgoing letters and incoming correspondence to Coulter from scholars, publishers, and former students. The correspondence reflects Coulter's activities at the University of Georgia (1919-1958); the publication of his books and articles; his activities with the American Historical Association, the Southern Historical Association, and the Georgia Civil War Centennial Commission; and his association with various historians. The most extensive group of correspondence (1929-1965) is with Roland M. Harper of the University of Alabama. The diaries (1910-1981, with gaps) contain often lengthy but sporadic entries describing Coulter's travels, his writings, his opinion of Georgia politics, and his daily activities. After 1952, the entries become very brief and focus on his daily activities.

Early materials (1857-1912) contain land grants and correspondence of the Wade family including John Daniel and Ida Anne, John Donald Wade's parents. The bulk of the collection pertains to Wade's involvement with and writings of the Agrarian concept, the Georgia Review, and the Marshallville Foundation, a beautification and improvement organization in Marshallville, Georgia. Major correspondents include such Southern writers as James Truslow Adams, Charles A. The collection consists of materials covering the life and career of Coleman Barks, with materials ranging from 1959-2017. Includes correspondence with other authors, such as John Moyne, Robert Bly, Annie Dillard, Mary Oliver, Reshad Feild, and James Dickey. Other notable correspondence includes filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman, actress Debra Winger, and former White House Press Secretary Bill Moyers. Collection includes extensive files from Barks' career, including early drafts and notes of his first published book of poetry, The Juice, extensive notes on his many Rumi books, and several other published and unpublished works. Notable items include Barks' first published poem The Recuperating in Box 30, and Barks' first Rumi translations in Box 19. This collection includes legal documents related to Letitia Vandexen (sic) Smith, Thomas Smith and Frances Sophia Smith. The Thomas Smith letterbook mainly consists of correspondence between members of the Thomas Smith family from 1767-1841. The earliest letters (1767 and 1784) are from Smith to his mother Elizabeth Lawrence in Aberdeenshire, England. A group of 21 letters between Smith and his cousin Dr. Peter Smith of Aberdeenshire discuss the American lifestyle, medical schools and practices, and the judicial system. Another group of letters to Judge Jasper Yeates and Governor Thomas Mifflin refer to legal decisions and court procedures. Other correspondents include Dr. Philip Physick and Smith's brother Charles of London, England. Also included in the letterbook are two proclamations awarding judgeships to Smith, legal documents pertaining to the settlement of Smith's estate (1816), and documents relating to land sales or mortgaged property (1826 and 1841). Series 2 contains typescripts of letters between Thomas Smith and soon-to-be U.S. President George Washington in 1785-1786, in which Smith was acting as Washington's attorney for some land suits in Philadelphia. The typescripts were made by Burton Alva Konkle in 1902. Finally, Series 3. contains letters between Thomas Smith scholar Burton Alva Konkle and Wymberly Jones De Renne regarding the Thomas Smith collection.
